The IASTructE–IIIT Hyderabad Student Chapter organised an online expert lecture on “Strengthening of RC Structures using FRP Composites” on 19th September 2026. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Taraka M. R. Balla, Scientist–C, CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI), New Delhi. The session focused on the application of Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites for strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) buildings and bridges, particularly in response to structural deterioration, design and construction deficiencies, evolving code provisions, and seismic demands.
Dr. Balla commenced the lecture with an overview of FRP composites and their potential as efficient alternatives to conventional strengthening techniques, such as concrete and steel jacketing. He discussed the advantages of FRP systems in enhancing the structural performance of existing RC members while addressing key challenges associated with structural strengthening and rehabilitation. Particular emphasis was placed on the appropriate selection, configuration, and orientation of FRP systems to achieve effective strengthening under different loading conditions. The lecture further covered FRP-based strengthening techniques for enhancing the axial, shear, and flexural capacities of RC members. Dr. Balla explained how different FRP strengthening configurations can be adopted depending on the structural requirements and governing modes of failure. The discussion was supported by insights from research investigations and practical applications, providing participants with a comprehensive perspective on the implementation of FRP composites in structural strengthening.
The session also highlighted the relevance of FRP-based techniques for rehabilitating, upgrading, and enhancing the performance of existing concrete structures. By linking research developments to practical structural engineering applications, Dr. Balla demonstrated the growing potential of composite materials to address challenges associated with ageing and vulnerable infrastructure. The lecture concluded with an interactive Question-and-Answer session, during which participants engaged in discussions on the adaptability of FRP systems, their structural behaviour, implementation challenges, and practical applications. Dr. Balla addressed the queries with detailed technical explanations and valuable insights drawn from field experience and research.
Overall, the lecture enhanced participants’ understanding of contemporary FRP-based strengthening and rehabilitation techniques and their application in improving the axial, shear, and flexural performance of RC members. The session provided valuable exposure to modern composite-based strengthening strategies and their potential contribution to the safety, durability, and performance of existing RC infrastructure.
